Wrestling: Shenendehowa duo moves to state semis

ALBANY — Thud. Bang. Crash.

Section II wrestlers didn’t need the sound effects to tell them that they had a rough opening day at the state wrestling tournament.

Only three Division I (large schools) wrestlers made this morning’s semifinal round, their hopes for a state tournament still alive.

The other 16 are either gone from the tournament, or will have to battle through the wrestlebacks for a chance to finish third.

The Division II team, made up of wrestlers from the smaller schools, fared a little better, putting six into the semifinals. But two of them — Duanesburg senior Connor Lawrence and Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George soph Jason Hoffman — will meet in a 160 semi this morning.

The three likeliest choices are the DI semifinalists — Shenendehowa teammates Jesse Porter (152) and Kevin Parker (170) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake senior Jake Ashcraft (182).
