HALFMOON — Lynn DeVoe-Warn, owner of DeVoe’s Rainbow Delights, slid into one of the booths within the indoor seating area.
It was the first time she had stopped to sit down that day. But this didn’t stop the spread of a genuine and wide smile underneath the brim of her pink baseball cap; she radiates positivity. Her uniform is the same as her employees’ — a tie-dye T-shirt displays the phrase, “I Got Sprinkled with Love,” which arches over a swirled heart on the back.
Those who reside in this area are well acquainted with DeVoe’s Orchard, which opened in 1932. The almost four-generation business — the fourth hasn’t completely stuck their heads in quite yet — has continued to thrive decade after decade. However, the ice cream stand is not quite as old.
“When I was 10, I begged my dad to please open up a Dairy Queen,” DeVoe-Warn said. “At that time, there were no soft-serve ice cream places here; we had to go to Latham or Saratoga for it.”
Her idea finally became a reality in 2000; this summer marks the 16th season. It is next door to the orchard, at 1569 Route 9.
Earlier that day, she was at the shop bright and early to clean the machines, start the grills and then begin the prep work, cutting peppers and onions for starters. Most of her days are full of constant motion — running her business is no easy feat.
The ice cream is adored by many; in fact many say it’s their favorite part. “My customers say it’s the ice cream,” DeVoe-Warn said. “They love our soft-serve, it’s really thick and creamy and our flavors are really good. My favorite [flavor] is the coffee.”
Devoe rotates through 14 soft-serve flavors in the summer, four of which are available on any given day. Then there are 16 flavors of hard ice cream to choose from.
Some of the most popular are pistachio, coffee and black raspberry. “We make it like we would want to eat it,” DeVoe-Warn said. “My husband used to say, ‘You know, we’ve got to make money on this, it’s not just the way you want it.’ It’s the same with the hot fudge on a sundae; there are always more pumps than there should be.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Ice cream isn’t the only thing on the menu. They also serve a wide variety of food such as hot dogs, fries, hamburgers, mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers and much more.
Their meat sauce was a work in progress for three years until they perfected it. “We just kept tweaking it and tweaking it,” DeVoe-Warn said. “Our Greeker Dog is the most popular item on the menu — it’s meat-sauce, mustard and raw onions.”
Most of all, though, DeVoe’s Rainbow Delights is a gathering place where friends and families can eat, laugh and enjoy each other’s company.
“Deep down, it’s handing out an ice cream with sprinkles on it to a little kid and they’ve got eyeballs like this big,” said DeVoe-Warn, forming a circle with her thumb and forefinger. “That’s just cool; it beings back good memories.”
It seems as though their shirts speak the truth, they sprinkle all customers — young and old — with love.
