CLIFTON PARK — A look at the latest news in Shenendehowa athletics.
Both the Shenendehowa boys’ basketball and Shenendehowa girls’ basketball teams topped Averill Park this past Friday.
The girls did so in particularly impressive fashion, using a 24-0 third quarter to help turn a halftime tie into a 64-36 win. In the victory, Carly Boland had 27 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, while Sydney Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Also, Cam Tooley collected 13 points and six assists.
Meanwhile, the boys won 74-34 as both Kevin Huerter and Luke Hicks scored 18 points apiece.
Both Shenendehowa teams are 2-0 and will play Niskayuna and Guilderland this week.
Against top-notch opponents, the Shenendehowa hockey team started its season with a pair of losses.
Over the weekend, the Plainsmen lost 5-1 decisions to both St. Joe’s Collegiate Institute and Mamaroneck. Adam Doescher and Jared Lambright scored Shenendehowa’s goals.
Next up, the Plainsmen play Suffern this Friday.
The Shenendehowa wrestling team won the Clyde Cole Invitational, contested Friday and Saturday in Oxford, with a team score of 269 points to dominate the field.
Four Plainsmen wrestlers won solo championships at the event.
At 126 pounds, Kiernan Shanahan won a 7-3 decision in his title match.
At 138 pounds, Kevin Guardino picked up a 4-1 victory in his championship.
At 170 pounds, Anthony DiNallo was an 11-3 winner.
At 182 pounds, Kevin Parker used a pinfall to win his title in 54 seconds.
Also, Friday, the Shenendehowa boys’ swimming and diving team picked up a 98-67 win against Queensbury. In the win, Luke Gordon was the lone Plainsmen swimmer to record multiple solo wins.
Several Shenendehowa athletes were recently named to all-state squads in girls’ athletics.
From Shenendehowa field hockey, senior Emily Fraser was named an all-state performer. Fraser led the Plainsmen to the Class A state semifinals.
In volleyball, sophomore Nicole Adams was a Class AA first-team all-state selection, while sophomore Charlotte Macken and junior Julia Paliwodzinski earned second-team honors.
The Shenendehowa girls’ volleyball team was also a state semifinalist.
The Suburban Council recently released its all-league teams for boys’ and girls’ cross country, with several Shenendehowa runners earning spots.
For the Shenendehowa boys’ cross country squad, Henry Christopher, Mitchell Halpern, and Alex Matson all were honored.
From the Shenendehowa girls’ cross country team, Danielle Jordan and Julia Zachgo each garnered selections.
