CLIFTON PARK — The town will be accepting property tax payments early.
On Dec. 28 and 29, the Clifton Park Receiver of Taxes will be available during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to accept 2018 Property Tax Payments.
The Town has received several inquiries in the last couple of weeks requesting this option. The reason for the request is speculation that paying their 2018 property tax bill in 2017, will allow homeowners to claim the deduction on their 2017 taxes.
This is the first time Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett has received this type of request.
“Upon receiving the initial request, we began to research the validity of this option and discuss the situation with Saratoga County personnel,” Barrett said. “When it was established that the acceptance of early payments are plausible, we made the decision to accept the payments as soon as possible. As always, we will make every effort to implement policies that accommodate requests from Clifton Park residents.”
“It is important to note, employees of the Town of Clifton Park are not authorized nor licensed to provide any recommendations or advice regarding tax matters of any kind. I received calls from people stating they read about making early property tax payments in national publications and websites. Some asked my advice about making early property tax payments and how the tax code will treat the corresponding deduction on their 2017 tax return. I nor anyone at the Town can provide advice in these matters. Before making these important decisions, it is prudent to consult with a professional who has the appropriate expertise,” Barrett added
The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors approved the tax information and Warrants for each municipality during the monthly Board of Supervisors’ Meeting on Dec. 19. The Chairman of the Board of Supervisors then must certify the information. Each year Saratoga County generates the tax bills, which are then administered by local municipalities like Clifton Park.
“We have requested that we receive the tax bills as soon as possible from the County,” Barrett added.
After reviewing the estimated timeline and Holiday schedule, the Town of Clifton Park will accept payments for the 2018 County Tax Bill at Town Hall on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
