New Delhi | The Air Force handed over the command of the combat unit deployed on the Pakistan border to Group Captain Shalija Dhami. For the first time in the 90- year history of the Indian Air Force, formed in 1932, a woman has become the commander of a combat unit. Dhami had joined the Air Force in 2003 as a helicopter pilot. Dhami, with 2,800 hours of flying experience, has been the second- in- command of a combat unit. Dhami is also the first woman officer in the country to get permanent commission in the flying branch. Now she will handle a missile warfare unit as commander. This unit is posted somewhere in Punjab. Military historians believe that the Air Force was unable to assign such a huge responsibility to a woman commander. This decision will prove to be a milestone.
