Germs are everywhere, and winter enables the spread of these pesky viruses and bacteria so much more than the warmer weather does: The heat is cranked up within homes, the windows are tightly shut and entire rooms become breeding grounds for these microorganisms. No one wants to get the flu; the virus comes on so quickly that it will have you on your back in bed, unwilling to move, faster than almost anything else. MECHANICVILLE —  Mechanicville High School senior Julia Amodeo has a new feather to add to her cap just a few months before graduation: first place in the statewide Annual Free Enterprise Marathon for Entrepreneurial High School and College Students. Amodeo, 17, is a senior at Mechanicville High School and a resident of Halfmoon. She got involved with the Clean Technologies Early College High School program during her junior year. Clean Tech ECHS is a program —led by Ballston Spa Central School District and involves many more area school districts — that prepares high school students for college courses and careers relating to energy efficiency. The Genius Plaza Bilingual Preschool on Moe Road officially opened its doors Nov. 2, after a year-long pilot program The school offers immersive bilingual full-day and partial day programs for children ages 3 to 5 and hosts an after-school program for older children. Family workshops and other events are held throughout the year, as well. Raising children to be bilingual is the only way to ensure they succeed in a global economy, according to Ana Roca Castro, the CEO of PreK12Plaza, an educational company that aims to "ignite the genius in every child" and is the parent company of the Genius Plaza.
