Apple AirTag 2: Enhanced Range and Security Features

Apple is reportedly set to unveil the second-generation AirTag this October, introducing significant upgrades to its tracking capabilities and security features.

Extended Tracking Range

The new AirTag is expected to feature an upgraded Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, potentially increasing the Precision Finding range from approximately 30 meters to up to 90 meters. This enhancement aims to improve the device’s effectiveness in locating items over greater distances, such as in large buildings or open spaces.

Improved Security Measures

Addressing concerns about misuse, Apple is redesigning the internal speaker to make it more tamper-resistant. This modification is intended to prevent unauthorized individuals from disabling the sound, which is crucial for locating lost items and for privacy alerts when an unknown AirTag is nearby.

Design and Battery

The AirTag 2 is anticipated to maintain a similar design to its predecessor, ensuring compatibility with existing accessories. It is expected to continue using the CR2032 coin cell battery, offering a year of usage with easy replacement. While some speculate about a slimmer form factor, details remain unconfirmed.

Launch Timeline

The AirTag 2 is likely to be announced alongside other Apple products in an October event, aligning with the company’s typical product release schedule. This launch is expected to coincide with updates to the iPad Pro and other smart home devices.

These enhancements position the AirTag 2 as a more reliable and secure item tracker, addressing previous limitations and expanding its utility for users.
