Punjab: Construction and repair work in schools will be done only after the school timings

In response to a tragic incident where a teacher lost their life due to the collapse of a school roof in Ludhiana, the Director General School Education in Punjab has issued new instructions regarding construction and repair work in schools. According to the directive, all construction and repair work in schools across Punjab will only take place only after the school timings, ensuring that no such activities occur when children are present on the premises.
Furthermore, the Public Works Department (PWD) will be responsible for overseeing all security arrangements during construction and repair work. The principals of the schools have been instructed to provide a report on ongoing construction and repairs, including information on whether safety measures have been implemented by the PWD. To ensure compliance, district officers and teams will conduct regular inspections of schools twice a week.
In addition to schools, the Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister, Dr. Baljit Kaur, has emphasized the need to address safety concerns in other educational facilities such as Anganwadi centers, crèches, and training centers. Any centers operating in unsafe buildings are to be relocated to safe premises promptly.
